Karachi: Traffic accidents in Karachi have reached an alarming level, with nearly 500 fatalities recorded in 2024, while 4,879 people sustained injuries, according to recent data.
A report published in Dawn, revealed that 497 bodies were brought for post-mortem examinations at three major hospitals: Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre/Civil Hospital Karachi, and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Among the deceased, 67 were women. Detailed figures show that Jinnah Hospital conducted post-mortems on 153 men and 21 women, Civil Hospital examined 96 men and 10 women, and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital handled 181 men and 36 women.
The police surgeon disclosed that 4,879 injured victims were taken to these three major government hospitals, including 1,035 women. The breakdown of injured victims includes 2,063 men and 893 women at Jinnah Hospital, 617 men and 44 women at Civil Hospital, and 1,164 men and 98 women at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Dr. Syed added that some injured individuals succumbed to their wounds during treatment, but their families opted against post-mortem examinations. She emphasized that the actual death toll could be higher, as not all fatalities were reported to hospital medico-legal sections.
Meanwhile, the rising trend has continued into 2025, with 107 deaths recorded in the first 45 days of the year.
According to a report by Chippa Welfare Association, the fatalities include 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls.
